Just like plants need good soil, sunshine and water to grow, positive childhood experiences provide the proper environments for children to flourish.

Annually, April is recognized as Child Abuse Prevention month.  This month and throughout the year, Campbell County Department of Social Services encourages all individuals and organizations to play a role in making our locality a better place for children and families. By ensuring that parents have the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to care for their children, we can help promote the social and emotional well-being of children and youth and prevent child maltreatment within families and communities.

On April 26, 2024, Campbell County Department of Social Services is hosting a Child Abuse Prevention & Awareness Event adjacent to their building at 69 Kabler Lane in Rustburg.  The event, which will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., is a family-friendly event, and all community members are invited to join.

This year's theme is 'Growing a Better Tomorrow...One Child at a Time,' and guests at the event can expect to:
  • Learn to spot the signs of child abuse, and how to report it;
  • Enter to win Give-Aways and Drawings for Prizes/Gift Cards;
  • Chat with Agency Representatives about Social Services programs, such as the Childcare Program;
  • Receive free seeds to plant in their own gardens to cultivate; and
  • Place a pinwheel in our awareness garden to share awareness of abuse prevention.
"The blue pinwheels represent hope for a happy and healthy childhood free from abuse and neglect," shares Shannon Carhart, Family Services Supervisor.

"The symbol was adopted in 2008 by Prevent Child Abuse America, whose mission is to prevent child abuse and neglect of all children in the United States."

Carhart further explains the pinwheel planting is a visual reminder of the world we want - for all children to grow up happy, healthy and prepared to succeed. "Every child deserves to grow up in a household free of violence," adds Carhart.  "The pinwheel garden represents our desire, as an agency, to help provide that."
