Transportation

Highways

Campbell County is bisected by three major highways. U.S. Route 460 travels east-west across the northernmost boundary of the county and U.S. Routes 29 and 501 travel north-south through the county. U.S. Routes 460 and 29 are four-lane highways with limited-access bypasses around Altavista and Lynchburg (U.S. 29) and a bypass around Lynchburg (U.S. 460). These highways provide quick and save access to major markets across the region, including Greensboro, Raleigh-Durham, Richmond, Roanoke, and Northern Virginia.

Airports
ABC 13 - Records Broken at Lynchburg's Airport

There are two airports located within Campbell County. The Lynchburg Regional Airport is owned and operated by the City of Lynchburg, but is located just off US Route 29 in Campbell County (see map above). Lynchburg Regional Airport offers commercial services and general aviation services. Connecting flights are available from Lynchburg to Atlanta and Charlotte and are priced competitively with major airports across the nation.

Brookneal-Campbell County Airport is a small general aviation airport located approximately six miles north-west of Brookneal with a 3,800' x 60' asphalt runway.

Rail

Amtrak presently operates passenger rail service from Lynchburg's Kemper Street Station. Amtrak's Crescent line, which runs from New Orleans to New York City, stops twice per day at the station. A new line called the Northeast Regional began operation in October 2009; it begins and ends in Lynchburg and connects the city with points up to New York. Please check Amtrak's website for a complete schedule and fare information.

Norfolk Southern owns and operates a number of freight rail lines within Campbell County; these lines connect with major markets in the Northeast, Southeast, and Midwest. CSX also operates a rail line that travels across the northernmost portion of the county that runs from the Midwest to the Hampton Roads. Campbell County is only a few hours by rail to port facilities in the Hampton Roads, which are among the largest and best shipping facilities in the world.
